I got my Birchbox the day before I was due to leave for Germany. I wasn’t that excited about the box overall, but I knew I could use these collagen eye pads to soothe tired eyes after my flight. Little did I know it would take days of struggling against jet lag before I could get my act together enough to try them out!

We got in Sunday afternoon and haven’t slept well at all. I keep waking up in the middle of the night. I can’t get back to sleep and then I sleep in the next morning, which I never do because I hate it because sleeping in = missing out. This is especially true when I’m travelling.

IMG_0696I’ve been travelling back and forth across the Atlantic since I was barely old enough to walk. I’ve taken this trip more times than I can remember. I’ve never had jet lag quite this badly before. I think it might be because I walked a lot on Monday. I mean…a lot.

So that brings me to today. We went out for dinner last night in Frankfurt and got in quite late. I think that stopped the cycle of nighttime waking and let me sleep properly and not too late. With the whole day ahead of me there was one thing I knew I had to do: catch up on posts!

Reviewing the Hydrating Collagen Eye Pads by Wilma Schumann European Skin Care seemed like the perfect thing for tired eyes in Europe.

Unboxing – so exciting! It doesn’t seem like it but the package actually has quite a lot of liquid in it. The eye pads are in a sort of clear plastic holding try within the outer package. When you open the outer package they don’t really stay in their plastic tray because of all the liquid so they can very easily slide out and onto the floor, for example. Luckily mine only fell in the sink.

Be careful as you open the package and try to feel around to make sure the eye pads are facing up in interior tray.

20 Minutes of Eye Hydration

After you remove the eye pads from the package you’ll notice they’re super slippery and have the consistency of jello. It does say on the package that they’re 100% collagen gel. That makes sense but it’s still surprising seeing how they move. I’ve never seen collagen outside of collagen supplement form! They’re allergy tested and also have allantoin, vitamin C packed rosa canina oil, and hyaluronic acid.

They stick to the eye area with no problem but you may notice as you wear them that they begin sliding down your face. I had to gently slide them back up a couple times.

Another unpleasant side effect (that other reviewers have also noted) is that they sting a bit! It’s pretty minor overall and didn’t leave any redness or anything like that so I’m not very concerned.

I was surprised that the total treatment time was 20 minutes.  That’s quite a long time as far as treatment masks go and given the eye area is more sensitive than the rest of the face I would have expected 5 minutes. In any case, I left them on for 20 minutes and took some pictures while I waited.

It’s been about 30 minutes since I took off the eye pads. It’s hard to say definitively whether they work but I did notice the following:

  • Hydration: My eye area feels very hydrated – surprisingly so. If I gently touch the area the pad was on, it feels plump and moisturized but not greasy. It’s a very different feeling from using vitamin e oil (that feels oily) or regular eye creams (that absorb and then they’re gone).
  • Fine Lines: The very fine lines in the corners of my eyes seem to be filled in the tiniest bit. It’s been very cold and windy here the past few days and of course we’ve been out and about walking around. As a result, my eyes are watering quite often, in addition to my eyes being tired in general. I think this was causing some irritation in the corners of my eyes that I didn’t even notice was there but that now seems to be much improved.  It isn’t a change anyone would notice but it is noticeable to me.
  • Puffiness/Dark Circles: I don’t know if these eye pads made a big difference in terms of puffiness or dark circles. Certainly they didn’t do anything that a cold spoon couldn’t accomplish in the same amount of time.

Overall Impression

I went into this thinking it was going to be like just another eye cream. I’m really pleased to report that the Wilma Schumann Hydrating Collagen Eye Pads do quite a bit more than that. I would definitely use these again, most likely in the winter or other super drying weather. I wouldn’t recommend them for anti-aging, puffiness or dark circles but if it’s eye area hydration you’re after then these would make a great addition to your beauty routine.
